As the corona-virus pandemic hits our countries, most of us are understandably confused and anxious. The precautionary measures being recommended (such as social distancing) will be tough on many individuals, and businesses. Amidst all of this, Muslims face a unique, possibly (and hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime dilemma of being cut-off from masajid, Umrah, and Islamic gatherings. It is therefore vital that we remain connected to our faith and that we ask and rely on Allah (SWT) for His mercy, forgiveness, and help during these difficult times for us physically, spiritually, and economically .
Morning and Evening Azkaar (remembrances of Allah) are an excellent way for us to invoke Allah (SWT)’s protections and blessings for us. In Surah Ahzab, Allah says:
O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon. It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels (ask Him to do so) that He may bring you out from darkness into light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful. (Surah Ahzab, 33:41-43)
Following are a few Morning and Evening Azkaar that can be particularly beneficial for us and that we can incorporate in our daily lives during this pandemic?
Allahumma inni as’aluka al-‘aafiyah fi’l-dunya wa’l-aakhirah. Allahumma inni as’aluka al-‘afw wa’l-‘aafiyah fi deeni wa dunyaaya wa ahli wa maali. Allahumma astur ‘awraati wa aamin raw‘aati. Allahumma ihfazni min bayna yadayya wa min khalfi wa ‘an yameeni wa ‘an shimaali wa min fawqi wa a’oodhu bi ‘azamatika an ughtaala min tahti
‘O Allah, I ask you for well-being in this world and the Next. O Allah, I ask you for forgiveness and well-being in my deen and in this world and in my family and my property. O Allah, veil my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, give me protection in front of me and behind me, on my right and my left and above me. I seek refuge by Your might from being overwhelmed from under me’ [Al Adab al Mufrad]
- The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to say in the morning:
Allahumma bika asbahna wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya wa bika namoot wa ilayka’an-nushoor
‘O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the morning and by Your leave we reach the evening, and by Your leave we live and by Your leave we die, and to You is the Resurrection’
And in the evening, he would say:
Allahumma bika amsayna wa bika asbahna, wa bika nahya wa bika namoot wa ilayka’al-maseer

Allahumma faatir al-samawaati wa’l-ard, ‘aalim al-ghaybi wa’l-shahaadah, Rabba kulli shay’in wa maleekahu, a‘oodhu bika min sharri nafsi wa sharri’sh-shaytaan wa shirkihi, wa an aqtarifa ‘ala nafsi soo’an aw ajurrahu ila muslim

Yaa Hayyu yaa Qayyoom, bi rahmatika astagheeth, aslih li sha’ni kullahu, wa laa takilni ilaa nafsi tarfata ‘ayn

- Uthman ibn Affan RA narrated: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: If anyone says three times,
Bisimillaahil-lathee laa yadhurru ma’as-mihi shay’un fil-’ardhi wa laa fis-samaa’i wa Huwas-Samee’ul Aleem

he will not suffer sudden affliction till the morning, and if anyone says this in the morning, he will not suffer sudden affliction till the evening.” (Sunan Abi Dawud).
- The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone says [the following dua] in the morning or in the evening, and dies during the daytime or during the night, he will go to Paradise.
‘O Allah! Thou art my Lord; there is no god but Thee, Thou hast created me, and I am Thy servant and hold to Thy covenant and promise as much as I can; I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I have done: I acknowledge Thy favour to me, and I acknowledge my sin; pardon me, for none but Thee pardons sins’ (Sahih Bukhari)

May Allah (SWT) protect us and our loved ones from this virus and help us become a pillar of support to those suffering. Ameen.
